11 Spaces That Feature Concrete

Docservis hosts a weekly photo contest on Instagram called #idpicks. Each Wednesday, we announce a new theme and ask our followers to tag their images with our hashtag. Here, we share the submissions that caught our eye. Make sure to check our Instagram account, @interiordesignmag, for the next topic and a chance to be featured!

This week, we asked to see images of interiors that feature concrete, such as artist Pedro Reyes's Brutalist Mexico City residence and WME's Nashville headquarters by Hastings Architecture Associates

For this week’s #idpicks contest, we want to see your best images of spaces that feature concrete! Tag your images and our editors will post the most eye-catching ones on Instagram and InteriorDesign.net next week. Habitat 67, Montreal. "When Moshe Safdie started sketching out his ideas for this prefabricated housing development back in the 1960s, his concept seemed the stuff of architecture-student daydreams: 354 concrete boxes stacked in such a way that each would have its own private outdoor space, and the composite total would form a three-dimensional pixelated mound. For today’s audience, stacked and staggered modules might seem mundane now that design software has made it easier to piece together these kinds of architectural puzzles. In the 1960s, though, Safdie imagined this form—and the complex interconnections of structure and mechanical systems—using pencil, paper, and physical models. 'We used a lot of Legos,' he remembers. 'We bought out entire stores of Legos.'" {2/3} As a result, less formally executed little vignettes capturing ethereal qualities as intangible as natural light, help in capturing the mood of a space and convey qualities that are perceived when experiencing it in person. • • • Project: @campjeffersonto Architect: @arch_lb Post-production: @smileyrelling Assistant: @annielondonto Year: Spring 2016
