The Case Study Houses are well-known as emblems of modernist architecture. One of the most famous is Pierre Koenig’s Stahl House (1960), where floor-to-ceiling glass windows offer unrivaled views of Los Angeles. This popularity is due in part to an iconic black-and-white Julius Shulman photograph of two women sitting leisurely in the living space, which propelled the residences to stardom shortly after construction.
This year, however, the Stahl family welcomes a new occupant: Design Within Reach’s 2018 collection. Modernist-inflected furnishings such as Neil Logan’s Lispenard Sofa and Nathan Yong’s Cove Bed emulate the 2,200-square-foot structure’s clean lines, while a pair of poolside Russell Woodard Sculptura chairs, revivals of the 1956 originals, look like they never left. The pieces will live in the house indefinitely, and tours are available to the public.
