Boyd Lighting’s Totem Collection Harks Back to Mid-Century

The assignment from CEO Jay Sweet was direct enough: Create a line evoking mid-century modern. But wouldn’t be the company’s director of design if he didn’t sweat the details. Scouring everything from pop art to Googie motels, he came to a conclusion: “There’s a craziness in it. Rectangles become trapezoids, circles become ovals.” Those recurring shapes became the basis for the of pendant fixtures and sconces. Cast aluminum components, finished in black or white, are gold-leafed inside, and then threaded onto vertical stems. Suspended at the center is an acrylic orb concealing two LEDs, placed back-to-back for 360-degree illumination. Oval and trapezoidal elements can match or mingle, each available in multiple sizes and custom configurations.
