A new pool in NYC? Well, yes, but this will make a different kind of splash: the city’s Department of Design and Construction has announced its pool of architecture firms pre-qualified to offer design and engineering services on all city projects.

Launched in 2004, the program has organized projects ranging from the completed Brooklyn Children’s Museum and MoMA’s PS1 entry kiosk to current developments like the Queens Museum of Art and the renovation of Times Square.

264 firms applied this year; 26 were chosen. Those selected for design work valued at $15 million or less include Abruzzo Bodziak Architects , Bade Stageberg Cox Architecture , Belmont Freeman Architects , Biber Architects , Cooper Joseph Studio , FR-EE Fernando Romero EnterprisE + HS2 , Gray Organschi Architecture , Hanrahan Meyers Architects , Leroy Street Studio , Levenbetts , Matthew Baird Architects , Monica Ponce de Leon Design and Architecture , Moorehead & Moorehead , nArchitects , Rice + Lipka Architects , Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects , Spacesmith , Studio SUMO , WXY , and Yoshihara McKee Architects .

The six firms selected for projects valued at $15 million or more are: Allied Works Architecture , BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group , Ennead , Steven Holl Architects , Studio Gang Architects , and TEN Arquitectos .

“The Design and Construction Excellence Program has produced high-quality buildings for public use, but has also reshaped the City’s procurement process by having the firms already on hand and pre-qualified," says David J. Burney, FAIA, Department of Design and Construction Commissioner.

Design can begin in a few weeks after a project is assigned to a firm, rather than the six to nine months required under past procurement methods, he explains. "Design Excellence matches the best firms to the right projects and the results will continue to serve the public for decades to come,” adds Burney.
