Memo from Warsaw: People Are Talking About

The Museum of the History of Polish Jews’ building in Warsaw’s Muranów district. Photography by Museum of the History of Polish Jews.

The building with the first Monument to the Ghetto Heroes in the foreground. The monument was created right after the war, already in 1946. The monument, designed by Leon Suzin, was unveiled on April 16th, 1946. Photography by Museum of the History of Polish Jews.

The copper-glass facade of the building. The word “Polin”, Hebrew for “Poland”, but also “here you shall dwell”, is etched on the glass panels in Hebrew and Latin letters. According to legend, those are the words the first Jewish settlers to come to Polish soil were supposed to have heard from the heavens. Photography by Rafa? Grunt.

The main entrance to the Museum, the entrance into the Main Hall. The Museum’s main hall faces the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes on one side and opens up on to the city on the other. Photography by Rafa? Grunt.

The unique Main Hall of the Museum. The shell of the building is muted, even austere. Clad in copper and glass, the building is broken by massive, undulating walls which cut through the entire height and length of the building. This chasm, this break, reflects the startling break in the 1000-year history of Polish Jews – the Holocaust. A break, but not and end. A bridge suspended over the Main Hall connects the two parts of the structure, as if binding the past with the future – bridging the rift. Photography by Rafa? Grunt.
