The polished poured concrete floors and exposed ceiling infrastructure in the reception area are reminders of the 1919 origins of the former military and industrial building in which Elkus Manfredi Architects is located. Photography by Jasper Sanidad.

“We want our design studio to stimulate the thinking of colleagues and clients beyond the boundaries of traditional architecture,” says Elizabeth Lowrey, principal and director of interior architecture. Artwork: THE ARK SERIES by Lida Lowrey (2008-2014). Photography by Jasper Sanidad.

Lida Lowrey’s art ranges from representational to abstract, all reflecting a design sensibility that marries deliberations in flat, two-dimensional spatial relations with a painterly aesthetic. Artwork: REMEMBERING PERIOD COMICS by Lida Lowrey (2008-2016). Photography by Jasper Sanidad.

Flooded with sunlight, the employee cafeteria is a space that rejuvenates. Users of the space engage naturally with Lida Lowrey’s playful, colorful period comics. Artwork: REMEMBERING PERIOD COMICS by Lida Lowrey (2008-2016). Photography by Jasper Sanidad.

In a client presentation room where Elkus Manfredi’s work for their clients is the primary focus, the art is subtle, with subject matter that is architectural in a quiet but strong gray scale. Artwork: TULUM 1 and TULUM 2 by Lida Lowrey (2011). Photography by Jasper Sanidad.

The sculpture in founding principal Howard Elkus’s office was originally commissioned for his father's office building in San Francisco. When Howard Elkus and David Manfredi founded Elkus Manfredi Architects in 1988, Elkus’s father shipped the sculpture to Boston where it has since adorned the wall of Elkus’s office through three office moves.
